Is Russian economy are success
I am answering on very interesting posting by Dr Bulldog ( read the posting) :“In a Capitalist Democratic economy, the President is rarely responsible for the success or failure of the country’s market economy, as the citizens are the primary motivating force behind the economy (even though the politicians would have you believe otherwise when they are running for office). However, in a Totalitarian Society, by definition the Leader and his co-horts are active participants in that country’s economic gains and losses. “
I do agree with that but I think if you know that ” Putin is in the process of consolidating power in Russia” we have to keep in mind that ;
1. it is easier for ruler to manage totalitarian state than democracy so you do not have to be a genius to rule economy by totalitarian means , however it is super intellectual task to manage economy of democratic state. So I would say it is apple and oranges we cannot compare both
2. Putin was the one who managed transition from democracy to totalitarism . And it is a will of Russian people by the way to be economically safe if even democracy has to abandoned. So his economic success is a price for lost democracy. May be it is a fair price, may be he was right to do what he did but you cannot judge him on economic achievement only, you have take in consideration the price he paid for these achievement and namely making the Russia a totalitarian state one more time again
3. I am not sure that we understand each other talking about economic success . Russia is the only country in the world which
3.1. 3 times during 20th century started new state
3.2. survived 2000% ( two thousands %) inflation during last 2 decades,
3.3.declared default and still has issues with paying Russian tsar debts.
So, with taking that democracy in Russia was traded in economic prosperity ,that Russia today is a totalitarian state , that totalitarian economy is easy to manage ,is what happening economically in Russia really a success?
It is surviving but it still has economy about of half of Italian economy . With all its treasurers like oil and gas and nickel and …. many other things in the soil it still less than Italy economically???? With sacrificed democracy for the sake of order and prosperity it still what it is? I think for Russians themselves it will be humiliating to call it success.
4. The USA in part is responsible for Russian lost democracy : I think neglecting Russia after collapse of USSR was a mistake equal and similar to neglecting Afghanistan after kicking soviets out of Afghanistan. In one case we got Taliban and bin laden as liability for neglect in another we got Mr. Putin who is essentially Russian Taliban. ) In the early 90s late 80s perception of US was very favorable in Russia until “Gore/ Chernomirdin” commission under supervision of Al Gore started pump blindly money into Russian economy ( read mafia) , until US bombed Belgrade and choose to support every single anti Russian move of former Russian satellites.
I guess the right question is: knowing what we know about Russia what kind of policy towards Russia USA has to undertake today ? What candidate in 2008 will be capable to deal with Russia properly?
